Flag Adopted: 1960 Date of Confederation: 1871 This flag is a duplication of the provincial shield but in rectangular shape. The Union Jack occupies the top third of the flag, the crown represents the court of King Edward VIII. The three blue on white stripes represents the Pacific ocean. The sun signifies that British Columbia’s location is the most westerly province of Canada. The shield was designed by Rev. Arthur John Beanlands.
